Still running for the cheese (or why this blog still exists)

As my regular readers can tell, this has been a dry year for me. Just look at the number of posts this year vs. 2008! Awhile back, I had considered either shutting down the Maze, or starting a new blog that would more accurately reflect where I am in life now. Truth be told, sometimes I come here, look around, and feel distinctly hypocrytical about the things I want to write. I'm sure I'm not the only one to ever be in that kind of place.
As the time in between posts has grown longer, I came to realize something. Without the past years' material, where I am now makes very little sense. What good is the destination without the journey? As Christians, so much of the best stuff that happens to us is in the times God is molding us to His image. To throw away the evidence of that process would somehow cheapen the result, I think.
So, here we are, dear friends. I think my little mousie may just have rounded a corner finally. Some things will change around here to reflect the changes in my heart. And you know what? That's ok. As much as I typically rage against anything changed in my life, I'm learning to accept the God-given ones. My prayer is that some of you may be encouraged by what you read here. Hey, you may even be challenged. And of course, if you know me, then you know you always stand a good chance of being offended too. Not intentionally, to be sure! Just know that what you find as you wander this Maze with me may surprise you as much as it does me.

All that to say this:

Monday Meme

It's been awhile (consistent I am not) since doing one of Cat's Monday memes. So here I am, noticing it's a Monday and all, and I thought, "Hey! Let's do this thing!"

1) What two colors do you think look the best together?
This is actually harder than I thought it'd be. There's lots of colors I love and many that look great together. My 1st thought is a nice deep red with black or maybe silver. But then again, purple and blue are great as well. Hmmm. I guess as long as there's no pukey looking colors involved, they all work for me!
2) For your memoir, describe what you looked like as a teenager.
Not much different than I do now. A little less fat but definitely still hefty. No gray hairs. More zits.
3) Do you know anyone born on your half-birthday?
That would be August 31 and nope. Most of my family was born in August (mom, dad, and brother all within a week of each other, and SIL's wife is also in August I believe) but not any on that specific day.
4) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one. Strangely enough, it makes me think of what my apartment complex might look like in a few hundred years. Hey, I haven't had my coffee yet.

Monday Meme

Many friends advised me that the easiest way to beat writer's block is to start simply. Hop on a blog train, or do a meme. Many also suggested various theme days.
So, here I am, hopping back on Cat's Monday meme.

1) How often do you whisper?
Not too often. Mostly on Saturday mornings when my 6 year old wakes up at the buttcrack of dawn. And yes, I'm whispering to tell him to go back to sleep.
2) When was the last time you called a help hotline? Did it solve the problem?
Hmmm. Maybe 3 years ago or so. We were looking for some help with our electric bill. Needless to say, they were no help at all.
3) How much time do you spend on yourself daily on average?
I am 1 of those lucky women who gets several hours a day to myself. My husbeast takes good care of me! I figure I'd better enjoy it now because come November, I'll no time at all to myself.
4) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
It just makes me think of that Stephen King short story. You know! They made that movie out of it. I'm thinking the story was called The Body, but the movie was Stand By Me. That sounds about right.

Monday Meme

It's been quite a long time since I've done one of these. So long that when a friend mentioned she was getting a meme up and running, my first thought was "Hey, I used to meme along with Cat! Why'd I ever stop doing that anyway?" So, conveniently, it's Monday, and here's the meme!
1) When were you most selfish? Least selfish? Hmmm, I don't know if I've ever been selfish enough to earn a selfish bitchcake, but then again, perhaps I have. My best guess would be any time I steal the Xbox 360 when Mr. P. or the kids want it. And that's at least a few times a week. Least selfish? Each and every time I deal with my in-laws.
2) Who is the best person for you to talk to when you have the blues? My hubby, hands down. He always makes me laugh, or at least gives me a furry shoulder to cry on.
3) Do you ever take naps during the day? I'm a lazy SAHM. Need I say more?
4) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

It makes me think of all the times I have to tell the boys to get stuff out of their mouths. A+ parenting huh?

Monday Meme

It's been ages since I've consistently done Cat's meme (truthfully, it's been ages since I've done much of anything consistently) and it's time to get off my bloggy butt and back in the game.

1) Who is the least generous friend you have? Probably me. Honestly, I've been blessed to have an incredible bunch of friends who are generous not only with their money, but their time, hearts, and support. We're a lucky group.
2) If you could change one thing about your typical day, what would you change? I'd like a double shot of motivation, please. Ugh. I've had pretty much zero get up and go since my surgery. I had gotten into the habit of napping during those first few days, and unfortunately...it stuck.
3) What has been the most profound experience of your life so far? This is a really hard one. I've been through a lot, and picking just 1 experience that stands out is like saying I like milk chocolate more than dark chocolate. Hmmm. I'd say that nearly losing my marriage has most profoundly affected me in my day-to-day life. I look at Mr. P. in such a different way now, and strive to understand not only "him" but "us". It's really changed what I value not only in him, but in myself as well.
4) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
Well, my first thought when I saw this was of a moldy tree that I saw at Girl Scout camp, but after saving it, I see that it's a "money tree". Hmmm. I think I'd like the money tree much better. Dang. I need to get me one of these, but clearly one that's in better shape.

Brown chicken, brown cow.

Read the post title aloud. Now say it again. A little faster. Ok, just one more time.

Now think about this:
That's one kinky barnyard!

That is all. Rooster Cow 3

Monday Meme

Yay! The first meme of the new year! Thanks Cat!

1) What is the cause that you believe is the most worthy of all those available? I swear, if there were an "Eliminate stupidity from the general human population" ribbon, I'd wear it proudly. Why oh why Lord, did You see fit to give this earth so many morons?
2) What problem is the most common among people your age? See above answer. Falling Off Chair Laughing
3) Who do you feel is the most underappreciated actor (male or female) in the history of Hollywood? I have no idea. Perhaps Hollywood gets too much appreciation as it is. After all, look how much $$$ those guys and gals make compared to our everyday heroes. Now that's under appreciation.
4) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
Ok I admit that I need new glasses. I saw this and thought, "Hmmm. Reminds me of the rocks near the Coppermine Brook by our place." Alas, according to the tag when you save it, it's dishes. Doh. Time to call my opto...bah, the eye doc.

Awardage...I haz it.

naejeirual over at Thinkin' gave me an award! (2 actually, but I'm taking 'em one at a time.) Go me! Running Man

I met Laurie some time back on christianmom.com (keep reminding myself to get back over there and somehow I always forget) and she's one of those awesomely encouraging people who you just know is never going to look down on you.

With this wondrous distinction come ponderous inquisitions. Mmmm fun.

Do you have any friends from childhood?
Hmmmm. Not so much from childhood, but from my teenage years, yes. Just ran into her at the grocery store last night. IRL, I'm mostly a loner, and the rare friend I do have, I treasure.

What do you value about your friends?
I love how my friends challenge me. Not one of us is exactly like the other. In fact, the people I hold dear are all so vastly different in so many ways that it has really opened my views on pretty much everything.

Are they your sounding board? Falling Off Chair Laughing Probably more than they care to be.

What activities do you like to share together? Ummm. Hmmm. Well. Since the majority of my friends are online, I'd say chatting online. Doh. I just showed my dorkitude.

I'm going to pass this award on to Meri! I met her over at CMF last year, and re-met earlier this year. She never fails to crack me up and inspire me. Oh, and I got her on the Keurig bandwagon. Smile

If you thought society was doing just fine...

You may just change your mind after reading this.

http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-world-europe/20081117/EU.Britain.New.Word/

Granted, I use "meh" quite a bit myself, and I'm one of those world class geeks who really does lolspeak BUT "meh" isn't worthy of dictionary status. C'mon people.
Kinda makes you wonder what we'll see in about 15 years time.

Monday Meme

So it's back to the meme, even though it's not Monday. Should be fun!

1) What is the longest time you could spend alone with your significant other (and no one else) before needing a break or time with other people? Well, we have kids, so in reality we can't be alone for long stretches. But, hypothetically, a life time. Who's life time is another story.
2) Has there ever been a time in your life that a change has occurred that you strongly resisted but that turned out for the better? Oh yeah. I used to be such a hard person. I prided myself on that. In the last year, God has been "softening" me. It's been so difficult, but so rewarding.
3) What is gossip and why do people do it? I'd say that gossip is talking about others in a way that you wouldn't if they were present. People do it because frankly, it gets you a little high to have that talk, that "knowledge" of someone else without them knowing it.
4) If you could completely remove someone’s vocal cords for a year, whose would they be? Tank's. Oh yes, my youngest son's vocal cords would have to go. Ahhhhh sweet peace and quiet. The boy literally talks non-stop.
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
It makes me think of the stairs you see on homes near the shore here. I've always wanted a house right on the beach, away from it all, away from people. Just me, Mr. P. and our kids. Ahhhhh sweet peace and quiet. Lordy I need a vacation.

I am Jack's carpal tunnel.

I get inflamed and squish Jack's median nerve. Jack can't feel his fingers.

Ye-e-e-e-ah, so I saw Fight Club for the first time last night. Holy smokes! If you've never seen it before, you don't know what you're missing!
I will say that one should have a high tolerance for violence, foul language, and crude humor before considering watching this movie. However, if you fit that description, go for it! Join the dork side! We have cookies!
Now I'll sit back and wait for the inevitable comment (likely from Mr. P.) about how I just broke the 1st rule of Fight Club. No

The bestest times

Happy Halloween, Squeakers!! Trick O’Treater

I'm greatly looking forward to trick-or-treating later this evening with my friends and family. For those of you that celebrate Halloween, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable night.

For me, this time of year (Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas) is the bestest time. I get so excited for my kids, and the new experiences they'll have. Heck, I get excited for myself!
I don't know about Mr. P., but I can't help but remember the year they were gone from our care. We missed out on so much of the holidays that year. I think that's why I find myself praising Him for even the smallest things during this season. A kid who's cranked up on sugar may not be the best thing to deal with, but Lord, thank You for letting me have them back that I might load 'em on Snickers bars one night a year. Sweet potatoes that didn't turn out perfect? A turkey that didn't quite have as much leftovers as we would have liked? Well, thank You Lord for that meal filled with my children's laughter. I sorely missed 'em that year they were in Vermont instead. Can't get the tree lights blinking right? Wrapping gifts at 2am Christmas Eve in a haze of exhaustion? Thank You Lord for letting us all be under 1 roof this year.
It's amazing how much your life can change after you've been pulled from the pit. Even the simplest things (Mr. P. remember the year the kids brought the snowball fight indoors on Thanksgiving? Too Funny ) make you realize all at once just how much you've lost and how far you've come.
I just praise the Lord that He brought us through those worst of times so that we can truly enjoy these very bestest ones.

Monday Meme

It's another Monday, and that means it's time to meme!

1) Why do we give people hugs? I think it depends on the person hugging, and their background. Personally, I've hugged just to be closer to someone and enjoy their warmth (Mr. P. ), but I've also hugged just to get a cheap thrill. Ahh high school days. Then again, I hug my kids to comfort them, and I've hugged grieving friends in a similar fashion. There's also the happy, overjoyed to see you hug. Hmmm. That was way longer than I meant it to be.
2) When have you most shocked yourself? There's plenty of times I was shocked at myself, but it's more accurate to say that God was doing the shocking. As far as shocking myself, well, there's the time I stuck a fork in the toaster...Scared 1oh wait, you didn't mean it that way? Then I'd have to say I'm pretty shocked at how much I love doing all the funky colors in my hair now. I really had a stick up my rear about being "mature" and obviously, plenty o' purple stripes ain't exactly oozing confidence and maturity.
3) Where would you consider constructing a small altar in your house or yard? Right next to my printer. It's where I have the most room for that sort of thing. Oh, and it's where the kids are least likely to take it into their heads that Jesus makes a rawkin' action figure.
4) If you could change one thing about your typical day, what would you change? Only 1 thing? Come now Cat, that's not fair! Tantrum Ok, 1 thing. I'd give myself more motivation. Since this whole carpal tunnel thing, I haven't felt like doing anything. I know I've got to get off my butt, yet it's so much easier to sit and wallow in self pity. Waa-a-a-a-a-ah! Now, who's calling my waahmbulance?
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
Photobucket
Hmmmm looks like a good way to answer number 2!

Melanie is the first squeaker to follow this blog! Woot woot! So guess what you win? Ermmm, your own post? Yeah, that sounds good.
ROTFL Thanks for making this lil maze (and me) feel special!

Til next squeak,

So that's the difference!

Mr. P. and I love going to the movies when we have the chance. It's not too often we get to go, but we almost always agree on what to see.
Everyone I know is all a-flutter about Fireproof, which is apparently the fall's biggest chick flick. Bleck. Not my thing. I know that makes me a bad Christian, bad wife, bad woman, and probably a bad person in general that I find that movie just sappy and ridiculous.
Mr. P. and I are hoping to have the extra funds (heck, any incoming funds, but that's a different story) in October to see Saw 5. Mwuhahahahaha! I guess that's just the kind of people we are. A gory murder thriller will do more for our marriage than an uplifting little movie about saving ones marriage through God. Speaks volumes huh?

Monday Meme

This week has flown by! So you know what time it is! Meme me baby one more time!

1) If you had to exchange souls with someone you know for one day, who would you pick? Hmmm. Either Mr. P. so I could gain more insight into what makes him tick (incidentally, he's my Timex...don't ask), or one of the supermoms I know so I can see how it's done firsthand.
2) When were you happiest to come home? Probably every time since we've lived here. I've got lots of great memories of this place.
3) What is your favorite part of the yesterday? Taking a nap while the kids were with SIL and her gf. Yeah, that was good.
4) What has been your greatest accomplishment in life so far? This, right now. Ain't it grand?
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
Heheheh. Someone took the time to hang up their stuff before gettin' it on. Heheheh.

Til next squeak,

Happy Halloweeners!

Welcome to the Halloween edition of the Maze! Bounce

We're one of those Christian families that actually really enjoys Halloween. Even after a few years of watching the hard feelings and division it can cause amongst people of faith, it still kinda boggles my mind.
Anyway, I decided to have some fun with my little mousy friend as the holiday season nears. He's got his wittle punkin hat, and will be sporting a new look for each holiday.
Yes, I'm a dork and proud of it.
Thanks to www.scrapblog.com for making this all easy to do!

Monday Meme

Looks like Cat has come up with a good one this week! I can't make any promises that my answers will be marvels of well-thought out prose because I'm still feeling quite punchy, but I'll give it my best shot.

1) Are you a leader or a follower? Ha! Neither! I'm a proud slacker, lazing about in all my scrimshanker glory. I don't have what it takes to lead, yet I'm too stubborn-minded to lead. So there you have it.
2) Who is the person you are most candid with? Mr. P. And isn't that how it should be? Lol Although I'm sure he'd say I'm perhaps a bit too candid with him.
3) What one thing in your life would be easiest to change, but you’ve never gotten around to it? Oh Lordy, pick one. Um, let's go with my housekeeping skills. Ok, so lack of.
4) If you could convince any single person to change his or her mind about one thing, who would you pick and what topic would you work on? Now this is a very hard one! I've been butting heads lately for my devilish liberal ways (can you see my eyes rolling?) so I can think of a few dozen people and a few dozen topics! Bah, maybe it's easier to say I'd change my mind!
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
Heheheh, owl. Owls go hoot. Mmmm Hooters. I could go for some wings about now.

Monday Meme

Monday meme, full of Tuesday goodness. Yeah, it's just that good.
1) What has been the most insincere expression of faith you have ever witnessed? Honestly, when I heard my dad converted to LDS (I heard this after his death), my first thought was, "Pffftt, yeah right."
2) If you could paint each room in your house a different color, what colors would you paint them? And not have to pay extra on the deposit when we move? Suh-weeet. (can you tell I'm sick of renting?) Um, I'd do some shade of green in the living room, maybe reds and yellows in the kitchen. Bathrooms I'd leave to the kids, just for fun. Our bedroom would be up to Mr. P. (NO BLACK!!) and for the boys' room? Hmmm, maybe one wall done with that chalkboard paint, and the others I'd leave up to them.
3) What is the biggest myth about sex? I'm really not one to answer this, mostly because I tend to think more like a horny teenage guy when it comes to sex. I'd say that the myth of married couples "making love" needs to go. Frankly, sex is sex. And if you can't get at least a little freaky most of the time, well, you're missing out.
4) Who is the most charming person you’ve ever met? Kinda dread answering this one. "T" is the most charming, hands down. But more in a "serpent in the garden" kinda way.
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

I've been fighting the urge to just hole up and hide away from humanity lately. This pic sums up where I'd rather be. Wonder if they make bumper stickers to that effect?

Monday Meme

Since there was no school yesterday, I thought it was Sunday. Oops. Here's another of Cat's Monday Memes done on Tuesday. Only 'cause I'm smooth like that.

1) What would you change about your workplace? ~Well, since I'm one of them there keepers at home (yeah, so I'm unemployed...) I'll just answer this one and #4 as if my home were my job.~ I'd give myself some modern conveniences! Like a dishwasher, a washer and dryer for the laundry, a freakin' car! Ya know, stuff like that. Welcome myself into the 21st century.
2) If, for the good of mankind, you could reverse one scientific discovery, what would you choose? Hmmm this is a toughy! Geez Cat! Maybe gastric bypass. You'd think a fat-ass like me would be on the "slice and dice my guts" bandwagon but I'm not. I think too many people use it because they're too lazy to get off their flabby butts and get to the gym. And guess what? I have the right to say that, seeing as I am a 300+ lb woman at the gym at least once a week, watchin' what the hell I shove down my pie-hole, and seeing some results. So, nyah. (ok off my soapbox now. LOL)
3) What is the dumbest thing people do to make themselves better-looking? I don't know about the single thing people in general do, but the single person who scored the highest in the "making myself look better seriously frickin' backfired" scale was definitely Michael Jackson. Yowsa.
4) If you worked with one person with X-ray vision, who would you least like for it to be? My youngest son, Tank. Oh Lordy. A 5 year old with X-ray vision who never stops running his mouth? Can you picture it? Just try. Ah. You're there, and it ain't pretty, is it?
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
My kids are crazy when it comes to cards. Playing cards, Pokemon cards, Yu-gi-oh cards, baseball cards and random cards that no one has ever heard of. Doesn't matter to them. They loves them cards. And my living room floor often looks like this. Spilled over with cards.
